Sustainability in the vineyard: the importance of SQNPI Certification for the Consorzio per la Tutela dei Vini Valpolicella.

The commitment of the Consortium for the Protection of Valpolicella Wines to achieve the excellence of great European wines also passes through sustainability and well-being for the territory. The National Quality System for Integrated Production (SQNPI), a voluntary certification that encourages environmental protection by companies through the adoption of innovative techniques in the vineyard, as well as social sustainability and protection of the landscape, goes in this direction.
The certification was also created to respond to the ever-increasing consumer demand for wines that express the territory, and to guarantee a healthier environment for all those who live in unique and protected places on a daily basis, Valpolicella in primis.
Monitoring the use of phytosanitary products by companies has led to positive results both on a technical level and in terms of effectiveness in safeguarding biodiversity, also thanks to the abandonment of weed-killing in the denomination’s vineyards. Defence and care of the land thus become fundamental values for vineyard and product quality on which the Consortium for the Protection of Valpolicella Wines has also laid the foundations for a free consultancy project dedicated to its members.
Today, the ‘green’ vineyard in Valpolicella represents 33%, or 2873 hectares out of a total of 8586.
An important step, a new standard that raises the bar for Italian wines, in line with European demands for safe, authentic and certified products.
